Mosaics Mosaics

Mosaiken

On the wall, there is a huge map of a church from the period round 400, with a double church of Roman Catholic people (round 500) and a double church of Arian Christian community from the Ostrogoths (round 500).

The mosaics originally decorated the floor in the community church of the Catholic Christian community. The starlike flower patterns and the edgings are typical for the workshop from the upper Adriatic area.

Mosaiken

The mosaics display cranes, ducks and water birds. According to antique natural history cranes symbolised community spirit and vigilance to Christian writers.

Mosaiken

Many square metres of the mosaic were destroyed during the first excavations in 1906. Only a small amount of the mosaic pictures displaying wine tendrils managed to be preserved. Christ said: „I am the grape vine and you are the vine shoot."
